Young Artists Summer School
11-15 Year Olds
Leith School of Art
1st-5th August 2022

Tutor: Fiona McWilliam

Inner worlds: a week exploring self-portrait and creative still-lives.

Young artists on this course will develop their observational drawing skills whilst also considering expressive and explorative ways of making art. The week will begin looking at traditional self-portraits as well as alternative concepts of what a self-portrait can be. We will use a wide variety of materials and techniques including: collage, drawing, mixed media, printmaking and sculpture. Students will be encouraged to develop their own ideas, whether making a self-portrait or creating a personal still life of objects to work from. Throughout the week, we will think about how our thoughts, ideas and interests can be communicated through art, while trying new things and working in unexpected ways. Students will leave with a diverse range of work, having built on their creative skills.

2020 Summer School

A week exploring sea stories and tidal tales.

Young artists on this course will develop their observational drawing skills whilst also considering more expressive means of exploring form and surface. The week will include an inspiring trip to the beach, where students will learn about drawing on location using sketchbooks, collecting found materials and panoramic sketching. The tutor will introduce the class to art works by leading artists based on themes of the sea, including Fiona Hutchison, Will MacLean and Robert Callender. The young artists will spend the week developing their initial drawings in to more imaginative pieces using collage, printmaking, painting, mixed media and sculpture. Encouragement will be offered to try new things and work in unexpected ways throughout the course of the week. Students will leave with a diverse range of work, having built on their creative skills as an artist.
